Registration is now open for the 28th annual Koger/Matteson Jazz Festival.
Thanks to all of the middle school and high school bands that participated in the 26th annual Koger/Matteson Jazz Festival. The faculty and students at the University of North Florida enjoyed working with all of the bands throughout the day. Next year's festival will take place on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015.
I will be presenting my original composition, Boogaloo, with the UT Knoxville Jazz Ensemble in the Composers' Concert featuring new works for jazz ensembles and combos during the 2014 Joint Conference of The College Music Society Southern Chapter and Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and Association for Technology in Music Instruction. Boogaloo is a funky, bluesy tune that was written with 1950's and 60's hard bop and soul jazz musicians in mind (i.e. Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Kenny Dorham, etc.)
I recently completed a work for wind ensemble entitled Peña Amaya. This piece evokes memories of an afternoon hike along the mountain trails of Peña Amaya, which is located in the province of Burgos in northern Spain. After learning of the historical significance of this landmark, with all of its ancient and medieval ruins, and after hearing a work from the Codex Las Huelgas, a medieval manuscript of Gregorian chants with origins in the region, I was inspired to compose this piece.
